One of college sports’ most epic basketball rivalries now has a new game day tradition. Blue Blood Rivalry and Endurance Magazine will be launching their very first Blue Blood Rivalry 5k on the morning of March 4th, Duke v. UNC Chapel Hill basketball game day.
One of the organizers, Jeff Atkinson, said that the group of alumni that created the event wanted “give back to the community and recreate some of the thrill of their college years for their family and friends.”
The event was basketball and rivalry inspired. Participants can choose to run or walk in the 5k, but they can also choose to dribble a basketball the entire distance. Upon registration, participants can select from one of three t-shirt designs: a pro-Duke shirt, a pro-UNC shirt, or a Party Crasher shirt [for those in the area that are in the same boat as my husband — who when choosing between Duke and UNC, will always choose NC State].
Proceeds for the event will go to the Special Olympics. “The Special Olympics relies 100% on donations, so we are extremely excited about this event,” said Kristen Randall of the Durham County Special Olympics. “We want the entire community to show up and support their school.”
