I sometimes wonder which holiday has more movies, Halloween or Christmas? I guess if you consider those Hallmark movies, Christmas probably takes the lead…how people watch those movies is beyond me. With countless Christmas movies at our disposal thanks to Netflix, Hulu, and our parents’ cable, we’ve got more than enough to keep us busy this week leading up to Christmas and get into the Christmas spirit. Here are the 15 best Christmas movies, comment below if you agree or disagree and what you would add to the list.
1. White Christmas
It’ not Christmas without this movie staple. A successful song-and-dance team become romantically involved with a sister act and team up to save the failing Vermont inn of their former commanding general in WWII.
2. Holiday Inn
At an inn which is only open on holidays, a singer and a dancer compete for the love of a beautiful up-and-coming performer.Yet another Christmas classic the whole family can enjoy featuring the old classic song “White Christmas.” Except for the black-face scene…that’s just messed up.
3. Love Actually
Some people are falling in love, others breaking up, and the rest are desperately lonely and still looking for someone special. This story follows 8 people who follow their hearts and show both love and anger. In the words of Hugh Grant’s beginning narration, “love actually is all around.”
After wrecking havoc at the North Pole, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to NYC to discover his true identity, and ultimately save Christmas.
5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
We love this movie. Christmas Vacation is the movie others strive to compete with. The Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration, but things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen, or their two kids. Clark’s continuus bad luck gets wrose when his obnoxiously family arrives and he keeps plugging away knowing that he’ll soon be rewarded with his Christmas bonus.
6. A Christmas Story
Ralphie dreams of owning a Red Rider BB gun and sets out to convine the world this is the perfect gift. But along the way, he runs into opposition from his parents, his teacher, and even good ol’ Santa Claus himself.
7. How The Grinch Stole Christmas
On the outskirts of Whoville, there lives a green, revenge-seeking Grinch who plans on ruining the Christmas holiday for all of the citizens of the town. Whether it’s the original cartoon or the Jim Carrey remake, this is a must watch for anyone that isn’t quite feeling in the Christmas Spirit.
8. The Muppet Christmas Carol
A retelling of the classic Dickens tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. He is held accountable for his dastardly ways during night-time visitations by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
9. Home Alone
An 8-year old troublemaker must protect his home from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation.
10. A Charlie Brown Christmas
When Charlie Brown complains about the overwhelming materialism that he sees amongst everyone during the Christmas season, Lucy suggests that he become director of the school Christmas paegent. Charlie Brown accepts, but it provess to be a frustrating struggle. When an attempt to restore the proper spirit with a forlorn little Christmas tree fails, Charlie enlists Linus’ help to learn the real meaning of Christmas.
11. The Santa Clause
When Scott Calvin accidentally startles Santa, causing him to fall to his death off Scott’s roof, he finds himself filling the big man’s pants Christmas night and delivering toys to children all over the world. Struggling to accept reality, Scott now has to keep it a secret from his disbelieving family.
12. Die Hard
John McClane tries to save his wife and several others that were taken hostage by German terrorist Hans Gruber (RIP Alan Rickman) during a Christmas party. Don’t tell me this isn’t a Christmas movie!
13. It’s a Wonderful Life
George Bailey, overwhelmed by family obligations and a sense of responsibility towards his community, feels tied down to a company he never had an interest in working for, and a life he never wanted to live. 14. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Sam the snowman tell su the story of a young red-nosed reindeer who, after being osted from the reindeer games because of his nose, teams up with Hermey, an elf who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, the prospector. When Santa’s sleigh is fogged in, Rudolph rises to the occasion.
15. Miracle on 34th Street
A little girl discovers dreams do come true if you really believe. After meeting a special department store Santa who’s convinced he’s the real thing, Susan is given the most precious gift of all – something to believe in.
