One of my goals during my college career is to become fluent in Spanish. Immersing yourself in a new culture is one of the most effective ways to become fluent in a new language. At times it can be difficult to retain the vocabulary and actually feeling like you’re making progress, but a little practice each day will help!

Here are some ways to incorporate a second language into your everyday life:

Duolingo

This phone application offers basic language lessons in over 20 different languages. You can complete daily tasks, set goals, and utilize this app wherever you go. It’s a great resource for learning popular vocabulary for a variety of languages.

Listen to music

Music allows you to learn and decipher lyrics in a new language! Listening to the lyrics also helps you learn the correct pronunciation of difficult words/phrases!

Read/Listen to the news

Choose a topic that you like! For example, I like reading magazine articles about new movies that are coming out. I found an online Spanish magazine called “Diario Libre.” The App Store and Google Play Store both offer news podcasts in a variety of languages. Some of my favorite Spanish Podcasts are “News in Slow Spanish” and “Coffee Break Spanish.”

Watch a television show

TV shows (my personal favorite, telenovelas) offer a visual aid along with the dialogue. This is excellent for deciphering another language because you are able to use context clues from the different scenes, facial expressions, and emotions expressed by characters.

Google can be your best friend for finding songs, news, and TV shows in a different language. When trying to learn a new language, it is important to be consistent! Choose a method that you are able to easily incorporate in your life, not one that feels like a difficult task. Practicing a new language can be a fun challenge with numerous benefits!
